AFTERNOON TEA
British teatime traditions in a traditional Swedish setting

Kristinehovs Malmgård, 4th April, 6.00 p.m.
On 4th April, Dr Paul Cleave,Exeter University, will visit Kristinehovs Malmgård, built in1790, to partake of a late-ish afternoon tea. Paul will share some of his research into the evolving traditions, culture, and etiquette of British afternoon tea. Drawing on historical records, literature, and poetry, he will tell the story of afternoon tea from farmhouses to luxury hotels o my and tea rooms, and from the southwest of England, how clotted cream, a regional dairy product became the basis of a cream tea. A SWEDISH CAR SALON WITH BRITISH VINTAGE CARS

Longtime member Peter Sommer has led a very interesting life, touring the world in his quest to see, and own, beautiful vintage cars. Bently, Jaguar and Royce Rolls are some of the brands, Royals, Maharajas and celebreties are his customers, and his cars previous owners. SPRING EXCURSION IN STOCKHOLM

CROQUET TOURNAMENT

Sunday May 5th

A day at the crocket lawn is something we haven’t explored. YET. We meet at Scandic Hotel Anglais for a fortifying lunch. Then we head towards Humlegården and “our” croquet lawn. 20 YEARS ANNIVERSARY GARDEN PARTY

The Swedish-British Society’s ‘garden’ Valhallavägen 104

We first celebrated a garden party in Sibyllegatan 9’s garden. 13 people came, the Youth section was the host. It has now grown so the adults can take part. Flowers and goodies galore including sparkling wine, tea, sandwiches, scones, cakes, both Swedish and British, and strawberries and cream are on offer. Our traditional hat competition will, we hope, as usual, cause mirth, delight and deep, deep despair, so do let your imaginations rip, gentlemen and ladies. FILM EVENING

MURDER AT THE VICARAGE’

Our film evenings began with Agatha Christie’s “Sparkling Cyanide” nine years ago.

Since then, we’ve seen many films together. Now, we venture back to the film of Christie’s much loved Miss Marple book, ‘Murder at the Vicarage’ with Joan Hickson as Miss Marple. Suitable eats and drinks will be served, scones, tea and sweets too. Cost for the evening is 150: - for members, 200: - for non-members.

WINE TASTING

After 12 years, sommelier Jane Sandström returns to us for a much sought-after wine tasting. We will taste five British wines. We will also hear about the grapes, and the wines’ histories.

The society welcomes all members to an early spring dinner to be held at Militärsällskapet, where we will enjoy a two-course meal with wine and coffee. SUNDAY ROAST

The ‘Sunday roast’ family lunch originated in British kitchens.

Though also eaten any day of the week, it is traditionally consumed on Sunday. It consists usually of roast beef with horseradish, lamb with mint sauce or pork with apple sauce. There are boiled, mashed or roast, potatoes. Yorkshire pudding (like ugnspannkaka) comes too, and gravy. That’s juice from the roast thickened with flour. As a first for the society, we’ll have ours at a British pub, the Old Brewer. ‘A SINGING AMBASSADOR’

Tuesday 7th November

Henrik Salander will lead us (with music) through the 1960s transformation of popular music and the musical journey of the Beatles.

A full-time musician during the 1960s, Henrik later entered the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs. Among other posts, he served as Sweden’s ambassador to the Geneva Conference on Disarmament and as Director-General of the weapons commission led by Hans Blix. This year’s St. Andrew’s Ball will welcome a surprise guest as main speaker. The programme includes music from The Thistle Pipe Band. The success of previous crayfish parties has encouraged us to try again. So come and battle with the crustaceans. If you’re new to the event, don’t worry, you’ll soon learn with other guests to show you. And there are instructional films on the net.

BATTLE OF BRITAIN COMMEMORATION & FILM EVENING

Battle of Britain Day  commemorates the day in 1940 that marked the peak in combat intensity between RAF Fighter Command and the German Luftwaffe. Villa Ludvigsberg welcomes Society members and friends to an evening with short presentations about the Battle. Those who missed our earlier showing of the 1969 Battle of Britain film have the chance to view it under appropriate conditions.

FILM EVENING- “KUNGEN”

For two years film director Karin af Klintberg lobbied the information department at the Royal Court. Finally, as the first journalist ever, she got a ‘yes’ – a unique opportunity to accompany His Majesty Carl XVI Gustaf closely in his life and work. This is the first time ever that a documentary film has been made about, and with, a real live king.

The king’s grandfather Gustaf VI Adolf and great-grandfather Gustaf V gave no interviews. As a tribute to His Majesty’s 50-year reign, the Swe-Brit Cinema will show this film. Suitable eats and drinks will be served, including sweeties and popcorn.

Her roles included Violetta in ‘La Traviata’, Sophie in ‘Rosenkavaljeren’, Rosalinda in ‘Läderlappen’, the countess in ‘the Marriage of Figaro’ and Helena in Britten’s ’Midsummer Night’s Dream’.

The popularity of our film evenings continues. Society member and Bond aficionado Björn Gävert will present the now-classic James Bond film “Goldfinger”. Björn has been interested in James Bond ever since his father took him to see the film when he was seven (1974). In 1989 he attended the TV quiz show Kvitt eller Dubbelt on the same subject. “Goldfinger” was released in 1964 and became a huge success, the third Bond film with Sean Connery as Bond. “Goldfinger” is still, after 24 films in nearly 60 years, considered one of the best Bond films ever. Many will remember Oddjob and his lethal bowler hat. Our Society was founded in November 1919. What better way of celebrating this a hundred years later than to meet in Grand Hotel’s Spegelsalen? So take out evening gowns, white-tie-and-tails.

Attractive prizes have been donated to the traditional lottery and raffle tickets will be sold early during the evening. Prizes will be presented by a special guest. Students from Lilla Musikaliska will play for us, and Mattias Enn will guide through music of the period and later. After dinner, we’ll dance to the music of Black on White Band.

‘LOVE ACTUALLY’

The Christmassy film, “Love Actually” from 2003, entertains with a jumble of love stories, some surprisingly interconnected. Hugh Grant plays a very young British Prime Minister with a most attractive secretary. The story begins five weeks before Christmas and is played out in a weekly countdown until the holiday. Mathias Rost, Manager at Biograf Zeta and a member of our Society, is kindly arranging our very own première of the new Downton Abbey film. A PIN - nicely designed, symbolizing the Swedish-British Society is available to members at 80:- (for one) and 150:- (for two). It can be obtained at events or ordered at 08-678 73 33.
