MEN’S FASHION - AN UNTOLD STORY

Ingrid Giertz-Mårtenson is a fashion historian and main editor of Men’s Fashion – An Untold Story. Men’s fashion has long hidden behind women’s, but here, fashion historians and writers prove otherwise. Ingrid’s career includes haute couture, CEO of the Swedish Fashion Council, fashion advisor, and curator of fashion exhibitions. She initiated fashion as an academic discipline at Stockholm University in 2006 and has published fashion articles. She will mention famous British tailors and meeting Winston Churchill at Chartwell. Wilhelm Moberg has given us a powerful and moving picture of Swedish emigration to Amerikay in four volumes. David Goldsmith and Eric Orlowski offer a brilliant outline compressed into a single lecture. They will show us who emigrated and how emigration flowed and ebbed depending mainly on economic conditions in both countries, beginning after the 1830s and dwindling to a trickle after the 1920s. No-one who likes British TV crime series is likely to have missed “Midsomer Murders.” Surrounded by lovely British countryside and charming old cottages, Chief detective inspector Barnaby chases killers and other criminals.
Author Helena Nordbäck has been fortunate enough to visit many of the scenarios that form the background to the thrilling episodes on a bus trip some years ago. She visited churches, pubs and villages, learnt a lot of history, real names and use of the buildings, all that has been seen in Midsomer on TV.
It was an absolutely fantastic journey, and this is her story.

BATTLE! OF BRITAIN COMMEMORATION DAY, and film evening

The 15 September is commemorated as Battle of Britain Day. This was the day when RAF Fighter Command claimed what proved to be a decisive victory over the German Luftwaffe in 1940. “Did you know that the father of one of our members was shot down a Heinkel?” Find out more as his son tells the fascinating story. The world-renowned aviation researcher and author Christer Bergström will discuss the myths of the Battle of Britain. Refreshments from the era will be served before a viewing of the 1969 film The Battle of Britain concludes the evening.

THE ÖSTERMALM MERRY_GO ROUND

Lawyer and author Helene Sjöman has recently published her second feelgood detective novel, Östermalmskarusellen. The Östermalm Merry-go-Round. The book is set mainly in Helene’s home area, Östermalm, and around Nice on the French Riviera. We accompany Pauline during some intensive weeks filled with plans for a wedding, hectic days in the law court and treacherous intrigues. Helene will tell us more about her books, why they are set in Östermalm and how her work as a lawyer led her to write feelgood books. She will also share tips for those who dream about writing a book. During the meeting, which should last about an hour, an autographed copy of The Östermalm Merry-go-Round will also be raffled among the participants. JOSEPH STEPHENS-JÄRNVÄGAR, VÄGAR TILL JÄRN

English-born Joseph Samuel Frithiof Stephens (1841-1934 was best known as the owner of Huseby ironworks and estate in Småland. After successful years as a colonial railway contractor in British India, he bought the ironworks, one of the largest connected estates in Sweden, in 1867. Ingemar Gunnarsson will present the interesting story of Joseph’s long and varied life, and his path to economic and social success in India and Sweden during the revolutionary nineteenth century. During Marie Forsman’s talk you will get to know yourself and your health better by finding out what “type” (physically, mentally and emotionally) you are and how you can support your own wellbeing. Marie Forsman is an Ayurvedic Advisor with a background as a massage therapist, personal trainer and life coach. Ayurveda is one of the tools she uses to help people live their best life.

The society welcomes members and guests to an early spring dinner at Haymarket by Scandic, where we will enjoy a two-course menu with wine and coffee. After dinner we will be enlightened and entertained by a distinguished guest who will give an interesting talk on a relevant. The speaker will be announced at a later stage. We’ve laid on a dance band, too, so come prepared.

Alison Allfrey will talk on her book So Sweden – living differently. The author and family moved to Sweden in 2012 and the book describes “a journey from apprehension to almost unconditional adoration of a cool, distinct country, admired from afar, little known. Sweden”.
Alison’s book will be on sale during the evening.
The talk is free of charge but the Swe-Brit Arms will be open so there will be drinks and substantial snacks on sale.

SPRING EXCURSION
Bååtska Palatset
Saturday 23rd May, 9.30 a.m.
We meet at Valhallavägen 157, (T-Station Karlaplan, exit Tessinparken), where a chartered bus leaves at 9.30 a.m. for Bååtska Palatset, Blasieholmen. There, we will be guided round the magnificent seventeenth-century palace which now houses the Order of Freemasons.
Our bus will then take us to Såstaholm mansion, a former actors’ retreat in rural Täby, for lunch. We then progress to an SBS member’s home for afternoon tea and aim to be back in Valhallavägen around 5.30 p.m.

Miscellaneous
THE SOCIETY’S HISTORY. We hope to arrange a presentation of the forthcoming book about the 100-year history of our society, written by our former president Professor Wilhelm Engström. Details will be sent to members when available.
THE AGATHA CHRISTIE CLUB will meet 2-3 times at our office during the spring. Members of the Club will continue to discuss and analyse Christie’s books and films based on her books. Refreshments will be served for a small contribution.

Music, music, music! Have you noticed the beautiful new building opposite us in Valhallavägen?! This is Stockholm’s Royal Academy of Music, already world-renowned for its fantastic custom-built qualities for music-making of every kind.
There are several concert halls of different sizes, dozens of sound-proofed rehearsal rooms, a black box for electronic music and much, much more, all surrounded by a well-planned and pleasant environment.

THE SOCIETY’S HISTORY. It is hoped to arrange for a presentation of the forthcoming book about the 100-year history of our society, written by our former president Professor Wilhelm Engström. Details will be sent to members when available.

Her roles included Violetta in ‘La Traviata’, Sophie in ‘Rosenkavaljeren’, Rosalinda in ‘Läderlappen’, the countess in ‘the Marriage of Figaro’ and Helena in Britten’s ’Midsummer Night’s Dream’.

The popularity of our film evenings continues. Society member and Bond aficionado Björn Gävert will present the now-classic James Bond film “Goldfinger”. Björn has been interested in James Bond ever since his father took him to see the film when he was seven (1974). In 1989 he attended the TV quiz show Kvitt eller Dubbelt on the same subject. “Goldfinger” was released in 1964 and became a huge success, the third Bond film with Sean Connery as Bond. “Goldfinger” is still, after 24 films in nearly 60 years, considered one of the best Bond films ever. Our Society was founded in November 1919. What better way of celebrating this a hundred years later than to meet in Grand Hotel’s Spegelsalen? So take out evening gowns, white-tie-and-tails.
Attractive prizes have been donated to the traditional lottery and raffle tickets will be sold early during the evening. Prizes will be presented by a special guest. Students from Lilla Musikaliska will play for us, and Mattias Enn will guide through music of the period and later. After dinner, we’ll dance to the music of Black on White Band.

The Christmassy film, “Love Actually” from 2003, entertains with a jumble of love stories, some surprisingly interconnected. Hugh Grant plays a very young British Prime Minister with a most attractive secretary. The story begins five weeks before Christmas and is played out in a weekly countdown until the holiday.
